5 Cybersecurity Statistics for 2026 Every Business Should Know

Five numbers from this year's threat data say more about where risk actually sits than any vendor roadmap. Each one points to a gap most organisations can close. Here are the top 5 cybersecurity facts of 2026, and what each should change in your plan.

1. Breakout time is down to 29 minutes

CrowdStrike's 2026 Global Threat Report puts average eCrime breakout time, the gap between initial access and the first lateral move, at 29 minutes: 65% faster than 2024. Attacks by AI-enabled adversaries rose 80%, and 82% of 2025 detections were malware-free, which means intruders are logging in rather than breaking in. If your response depends on a person working through an alert queue, the clock has already beaten you.

2. 471.2 million victim notices in six months

The Identity Theft Resource Center counted roughly 471.2 million victim notices in the first half of 2026, from 1,803 compromises. That is more than the 297.5 million issued in all of 2025, and close to one notice for every person in the US and Canada. A single platform breach produced 275 million of them. Breach impact no longer stops at the breached company; it travels through platforms and suppliers to everyone connected to them.

3. Only 4% of small firms trust their cyber insurance

In the World Economic Forum's Global Cybersecurity Outlook, 4% of small organisations said they were confident in their cyber insurance, against 20% of large ones, and 64% of small firms lacked confidence outright. Insurance is a financing instrument, not a control. Check the exclusions, the evidence you would have to produce and the security conditions you agreed to before you rely on a payout.

4. The biggest breaches of 2026 were skills gaps, not technology gaps

The year's headline incidents follow a pattern: 149 million records left in a misconfigured cloud database, 10 million user records allegedly exposed through third-party access at Match Group, 1.4TB of internal data taken from Nike. The causes were weak identity management, cloud misconfiguration, unpatched vulnerabilities and vendor risk. None of them needed a novel exploit, which makes capability, not tooling, the binding constraint.

5. Shadow AI is already running in your environment

AI arrives through browser extensions, SaaS features and developer tooling rather than procurement, so the first control is visibility. Gartner's monitoring list is specific: model characteristics, prompt activity, plugin usage and authorisation, behavioural changes in API calls, data access and use, AI degradation or inaction, resistance to change, shutdown or rollback, and the feedback loops between humans, sensors and agents. If none of that is monitored today, start with an inventory rather than a policy.

Read together, the five point the same way: attackers are reusing known gaps faster than most teams close them, so the work is prioritisation rather than new tooling.

Frequently asked questions

What is breakout time in cybersecurity?

It is the time between an attacker gaining initial access and making their first lateral move. At an average of 29 minutes, it sets the realistic budget for detection and response.

Why were most 2026 breaches preventable?

They relied on known weaknesses: weak identity management, cloud misconfiguration, unpatched vulnerabilities and vendor access. Novel exploits were the exception, not the rule.

Does cyber insurance cover a data breach?

Cover depends on the exclusions and the security conditions in your policy. Confidence is lowest among small firms, so read those conditions before treating insurance as your fallback.

What is shadow AI?

Any AI tool, extension or feature used without IT or security approval, including AI switched on inside SaaS platforms you already pay for.

Where should a small security team start?

Inventory identities, cloud configuration and AI use, close the exposures attackers reuse, and rehearse your response against a 29-minute clock.
